Flesh And The Fiends: Double Feature - Edinburgh, 1827. Two Irish immigrants hit upon the idea of selling the bodies of the recently deceased to eminent surgeon Dr. Robert Knox. But when their supply of corpses runs out, they decide to murder for their inventory. Raiders Of The Living Dead - In an abandoned prison, a doctor has revived executed convicts as the living dead. Teenager Scott Schwartz (A Christmas Story) creates a weapon from a videodisc player#s laser and pursus the walking dead, aided by his girlfriend and grandfather (western star Bob Allen). A reporter (Robert Deveau) on the trail of the story is helped by the town librarian, played in her final film role by Zita Johann (Boris Karloff’s “The Mummy,” “The Sin of Nora Moran”). On the prison island, the zombies attack a security guard and tear him apart as the reporter and teenager venture into the prison caverns for a final showdown.

Filmed on location at the Family Dog Ballroom in San Francisco in September, 1970, the show captures the heyday and diversity of the San Francisco sound with three of the most well known bands to emerge from the scene: Santana, who would release their second album at the end of 1970; The Grateful Dead, including original band member Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, who were making a name for themselves with their jam-filled performances; and Jefferson Airplane, who were at the time the biggest of the bands from the area.

San Francisco was an area of artistic creation during the mid-to-late 60’s. Whether it was art, poetry or music, the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco was the place for like-minded individuals to explore and create. Noted jazz columnist Ralph J. Gleason took note of the exploding rock music scene and produced several television specials and documentaries spotlighting the music emerging from San Francisco. A Night At The Family Dog is one part of a two-part series (the other is Go Ride The Music) that aired on The National Educational Television Network in 1970.

The audio for this program has been extrapolated up to Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound mixes from their original mono source! This show has never sounded or looked so good!

This is a nicely animated musical that’s loosely based on the tru story of the composition of “Silent Night” in 1818 by Father Joseph Mohr and Choirmaster Franz Gruber. It’s Christmas Eve and mouse-icians Buster and Chauncey are on their way to the town of Oberndorf to sing for the QUn. The whole town is a flutter with preparations, so imagine Burghermeister Huffenmeir’s distress when the Duke of Raoche and his niece Lady Gretchen arrive a day early. Also newly arrived is Christina, an orphan girl on her way to Vienna in hopes of finding her aunt and uncle. When the Oberndorf treasure is found missing, all clus point to Christina, who steadfastly denies the charge. Father Joseph believes the girl, but it’s up to Chauncey and Buster to prove her innocence and apprehend the real thieves. In the end, the Christmas celebration with the QUn is not as lavish as originally planned but proves much more meaningful. The town discovers that the tru meaning of Christmas is not fame or fortune but friendship, sharing, and giving, and they celebrate their new wisdom by singing “Silent Night,” a Christmas song composed by Father Joseph and Franz on that tumultuous Christmas Eve. This musical is full of compelling songs written by such great musical composers as Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens, Barry Harman, and Keith Herrmann. Voice talents Phil Hartman, Marie Osmond, and Tom Arnold add much to an already great production. What a wonderful way to communicate the meaning of Christmas. (Ages 3-12) –Tami Horiuchi

A varied collection of vintage newsreel clips, audio material, and even movie trailers documents 1941, a year in which America tried to focus on a spectacular baseball season though entry into World War II would prove to be inevitable. The Movietone newsreel footage assembled in this collection contains lighthearted segments on the crowning of a new Miss America, a cotton picking contest, a motorboat show, and the New York Yankees defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series. But the war news dominates. Dramatic footage shows damage from German air raids over London, including scenes of bomb damage on the famed clock Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the House of Commons. The biggest news event of 1941 was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and as it happened a Movietone cameraman was at the naval base to film the fleet. His footage, which was first approved by government authorities, is remarkable, showing the battleship Arizona as it burned after being bombed. An audio portion of the disc (still images are shown onscreen while it plays) contains live broadcasts by the bands of Harry James and Glenn Miller, and news broadcasts, including the entire “date which will live in infamy” speech President Roosevelt delivered before Congress following the Pearl Harbor attack.
